In 2018, God gave me the vision for a fiction book.
I say vision because that’s exactly how it felt.
I remember the day so clearly. I was terribly ill, the kind of sickness where your mind feels foggy, and you’re not even sure where you are. My fever was high, and I’d been lying down all day when suddenly, a story began to play in my mind’s eye.
I could see her, the main character, moving and speaking as though she was alive. I could see the other characters. The first scene was vivid, detailed, and alive in a way I had never experienced before.
Up until then, I didn’t know this was even possible.
When my fever finally broke, I wrote down everything I could remember. It wasn’t a typical storyline, and for some reason, I knew deep down that this was a story I was meant to write.
So when I got better, I began. At first, I was excited. The words flowed easily. But then… the middle came. The messy, complicated middle. The part of every creative project where you can no longer see the end from the beginning.
And I gave up.
The Whispers That Kill Dreams
I didn’t just give up because I was stuck in the plot, I gave up because I listened to the whispers:
- “Who do you think you are to write a novel?”
- “Who will read your book? You can barely write without grammatical errors.”
- “You’re not a real writer. Just let it go.”
And so I let it go.
Recently, I found myself drawn back to that manuscript after six long years. I was ready to start again. But as I reread it, I realised something painful: the storyline that would have made sense in 2018 felt outdated in 2025.
My heart sank, it felt like I had missed my window.
When We Delay, We Risk Losing the Moment
I was heartbroken, not just because the story had gone cold, but because I realised this wasn’t just about a book. It was about obedience.
God had trusted me with something, and I had let fear and self-doubt talk me out of it.
And I know I’m not alone.
Maybe you have been here too.
Your Story Might Be Different, But the Struggle Is the Same
Maybe for you it wasn’t a novel.
Perhaps it was a business idea.
A ministry God told you to start.
A course you were meant to create.
A degree you were meant to finish.
A conversation you were meant to have.
You began with excitement, but somewhere along the way, the whispers came. The doubt crept in. Life got busy. And before you knew it, that dream was sitting in a forgotten corner of your life, gathering dust.
It’s Not Too Late, But You Have to Decide
Here’s the truth: the longer you wait, the harder it becomes to return. Some opportunities have a shelf life. But even if the original version of your dream has passed, God is still able to give you a fresh one.
The question is: will you start?
Will you obey this time?
Your Call to Action Today
If God has placed something in your heart; go back to it.
Don’t talk yourself out of it. Don’t wait for the “perfect” moment.
You may not be able to rewrite 2018, but you can start it this year with obedience. And when you do, you’ll discover that what matters most is not the speed, but the faithfulness to move when God says move.
So dust off that dream. Open that notebook. Pick up that plan.
Because if God gave it to you, He still has a reason for it.
And your “yes” today might just be the beginning of something world-changing tomorrow. Amen
