When we think of worship, most of us picture church services: lifting our hands, singing songs, giving offerings. But what if I told you that worship isn’t confined to Sunday mornings or church walls?
From the very beginning, God designed work to be an act of worship. In Genesis 2:15, before sin ever entered the world, the Bible says: “The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.”
Adam’s first assignment wasn’t preaching a sermon or leading a choir, it was tending a garden. His daily labor was holy.
I believe this truth dismantles the false divide we often create between what’s “sacred” (preaching, missions, volunteering) and what’s “secular” (business, corporate work, homemaking).
In God’s eyes, obedience is what makes something holy.
My Story: Business as Assignment
During the early years of my Christianity, I noticed a trend that whether consciously or unconsiously signified that the highest callng of a christian was serving in church or volunteering for a mission organization. This idea was so prevalent that when someone said God was calling them, we all but expected the call to be to ministry.
It took some years and the active work of the Holy Ghost to shake off this mindset. So that when God called me to business years later, I didn’t think any less of it.
Over time, the Holy Spirit made it clear: building and stewarding my business was as much an act of obedience as preaching would have been.
If I had abandoned this assignment to “look” more spiritual, I would have been walking in disobedience. True worship is not about where you serve, it’s about who you obey.
Why Work Matters to God
- Work is part of God’s design
Work was given before the fall. That means it’s not a curse, but a calling. - Excellence reflects His character
Colossians 3:23 reminds us: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” When we approach our careers and businesses with diligence and excellence, we put God’s nature on display. - Work is a platform for witness
Your workplace may never host a Sunday service, but it may be the only place some people ever encounter Christ. The way you handle pressure, integrity, and kindness speaks louder than a sermon.
Practical Ways to Worship Through Work
- Start your workday with prayer. Invite God into your meetings, deadlines, and decisions.
- Pursue excellence, not perfection. Excellence honors God; perfectionism often glorifies self.
- See your income as seed. Your salary, profits, or wages are not just for bills, they’re resources to steward for kingdom impact.
- Work with integrity. Small choices; meeting deadlines, keeping promises, avoiding shortcuts, are acts of worship.
Questions for You
- Have I been treating my work as “less spiritual” than church activities?
- Am I obeying God in the work He has assigned to me, or am I chasing what looks holier?
- How can I consciously invite God into my daily tasks this week?
Closing Thought
The sacred/secular divide is a myth. The only thing that makes something sacred is God’s presence, and He is with you in the office, in the classroom, in the marketplace, just as much as He is in the sanctuary.
So whether you are running a business, climbing the corporate ladder, or managing a home, remember this: when done in obedience to God, your work is worship.
