Do you ever feel like time has passed you by?
Like you’ve missed your chance, or that it’s “too late” to step into the dreams God has placed in your heart?
Many of us carry this quiet ache as we grow older. But Scripture reminds us again and again that God is not bound by our clocks.
Abraham and Sarah became parents long after their time. Elizabeth carried John the Baptist in her old age. Moses stepped into his calling at 80.
The message is clear: God’s timing is never too late.
Gladys Aylward: Rejected but Not Disqualified
Gladys Aylward longed to be a missionary in China. She applied to a mission board in her 30s but was rejected, they said she wasn’t qualified enough. Most people would have given up, assuming the window of opportunity had closed. But Gladys refused to let “too late” define her story.
She saved money, bought her own ticket to China, and went anyway. Her obedience led to a life of remarkable impact — caring for orphans, sharing the gospel, and even leading hundreds of children to safety during wartime. Gladys’ story shows us that rejection and age don’t disqualify us when God has called us.
Lydia Prince: Answering the Call at 35
We talked a bit about Lydia Prince’s story in the last post. At 35, when most expected her to “settle down,” she walked away from her career in Denmark to serve in Jerusalem. It wasn’t glamorous. She lived simply, faced loneliness, and raised abandoned children in faith. But through her obedience, she became a spiritual mother to many and eventually walked alongside her husband, Derek Prince, in global ministry.
Her life reminds us that obedience in one season often prepares us for fruitfulness in the next. What looked like “late” was actually right on time.
Our Temptation to Believe It’s Too Late
Growing older often brings a temptation to believe our best years are behind us. Maybe you’ve thought:
- “I should have started earlier.”
- “I’m too old to change now.”
- “It won’t matter anymore.”
But those thoughts are lies meant to paralyze you. God’s Word says:
- “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion” (Philippians 1:6).
- “The gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable” (Romans 11:29).
If God has called you, no age, delay, or detour can cancel His plan.
What This Means for Us
Obedience is never bound by a clock. In fact, sometimes it’s in the later years, with more maturity, humility, and dependence on God, that we are most ready to obey.
Like Gladys and Lydia, you can step out in faith today — whether it’s starting a ministry, changing direction, writing the book, or mentoring younger women. It’s not too late.
Questions for You:
- Where have you believed the lie that “it’s too late” for you?
- What is one step of obedience you sense God nudging you toward right now?
- Who can you encourage by sharing that God’s call doesn’t expire with age?
Prayer of Faith
Lord, thank You that my life is in Your hands, not mine.
Forgive me for believing it’s too late to obey You.
Like Gladys and Lydia and many other women and men who have walked this journey of faith, give me courage to say yes today, no matter my age, no matter my past.
Help me trust Your timing and walk boldly into the call You’ve placed on my life.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
