Have you ever had revelations about life and the Christian walk?
You probably have.
I think the older we get the more we experience such moments.
In 2018, I tabled down some things God taught me during that season of my life. These things revolved around a few areas of life, including some sensitive topics like divorce, tithing, and even the place of secular music.
I came across these notes recently and I have decided to share these, God being my helper. I will confess that I have often avoided controversial topics, but not any more. I pray for continued grace and wisdom to share whatever the Lord lays on my heart. Amen
Eight Things to Ponder as a 21st-Century Christian
1. Identity
Our worth and wholeness lie in Christ. Nothing else can ever fill us completely or give meaning to our lives. He gives essence to our lives and purpose to our paths. This is a fundamental and indestructible truth, but until we believe it and live it, it may never be our reality.
2. On marriage
It is a reflection of His plan for mankind and most especially, it’s a kingdom movement. God needs to be a part of it from the very foundation as he is the one who shapes our sacrifice and commitment into a channel to impact our world.
3. On tithing
How do we give 10% to the one that owns it all?
It’s not for us to decide what to give to God but to ask God what he wants us to give to him. He is the true owner of all riches, we are merely his trustees(stewards) on earth.
Stewards have to give an account. God gave us the Holy Spirit to reveal God’s heart on a matter, per time. Yet, we want to remain on a prescription ( a law that is static) set on tablets of stone when he has now written his laws in our hearts (Hebrews 8:10).
4. On spirituality
Everything is spiritual. We were first spiritual beings before we became flesh(Genesis 1:26-28). It is God that gives ideas, but it is up to us how these ideas are utilised. The fact that science was used by some to “prove” God doesn’t exist does not mean it wasn’t God that gave the wisdom and revelation.
One of the things I’ve realised in my own life is that I am at my most productive and creative when I walk in obedience. This is the assurance I have that God is involved in everything I am doing.
More so, He is willing and ready to guide us daily, to give us ideas, and solutions if only we will listen, trust and obey.
5. On Christian living
Our Christian values must permeate every aspect of our lives. It’s not a Sunday-Sunday matter. God must prevail in everything.
His counsel must be sought in all we do. There are Bible references where Jesus says he did nothing of his own will but what he saw the father doing (John 15:19) and we can do nothing without him(John 15:5).
Have you ever wondered what this ‘nothing’ means? Like where do we draw the proverbial line?
For me, I am learning that giving God His rightful place in our lives means we are supernaturally guided even when our steps don’t make sense.
It means that we can do impossible things like walking on water or everyday things like choosing our outfits for the day.
More so, we are not dogmatic in this practice but allow His spirit to minister to our spirit. I have found that when we fail to listen in such moments, whatever we try to do without Him is already corrupted and likely to be abused.
6. On culture
Culture evolves. It is not static but remains a body of rules and practices of a people, per time. Our cultures must not take the place of God.
It must always be God first, his principles and values must always guide us first. It is then those principles that should dictate the culture, not the other way around. And our culture must be continually refined till it becomes a mirror of God’s plan for mankind.
7. On divorce
Forgiveness is key.
On a particular Sunday evening home fellowship, in 2018, while we were discussing Biblical reasons for divorce and separation, the Lord revealed an amazing truth to me.
He juxtaposed our relationship with Him to the relationship between spouses. He reminded me that we have done unbelievable things against Him yet died on the cross for us, and is ever ready to forgive us. God reminded me that we have been called to give our all. He showed me that He doesn’t want divorce because it goes against the grain of our relationship with Him. Because He said He will never leave nor forsake us. This means even in our filth and depravity, He is still close. Even when we lose sight of our values and His commandments, He is still there.
8. Music
I don’t believe God ever restricted Christians to just gospel music. We chose it as we chose religion. We made it an either-or thing. It is so ingrained that even those who God has gifted believe their only expression of this gift lies in gospel music.
But I cannot believe this because He is a God who gives good gifts though we often abuse this.
More so, I have seen that music remains a powerful force. A medium of good and demonic communication. I believe that there are those God has called to reach the unbelievers through music. These song ideas will be from the Holy Spirit. They will be songs of love and of the heart of the father but God’s name will not be mentioned. In fact, the world will not understand what has hit them but through this music, God will touch many generations. Lord, I pray this comes to pass in my generation.
