Did you know that before God calls you out, He often calls you in.
Into a hidden place.
Into quiet.
Into the wilderness.
This is not punishment, but preparation.
Many of us want to step into our calling, our next season, or our answered prayers, but we often forget that God forms us in solitude long before He reveals us in the spotlight. The wilderness is not where God abandons you; it’s where He incubates you.
Think about it, many of our fathers in the faith walked through a similar season.
-
Moses met God in the wilderness (Exodus 3)
-
David learned faithfulness while tending sheep away from everyone’s eyes. God had been preparing David even as a lad so that when it was time, he would be able to overcome. Here’s what David said when he was brought before King Saul:“I’ve been a shepherd, tending sheep for my father. Whenever a lion or bear came and took a lamb from the flock, I’d go after it, knock it down, and rescue the lamb. If it turned on me, I’d grab it by the throat, wring its neck, and kill it. Lion or bear, it made no difference—I killed it. And I’ll do the same to this Philistine pig who is taunting the troops of God-Alive. God, who delivered me from the teeth of the lion and the claws of the bear, will deliver me from this Philistine.”
Saul said, “Go. And God help you!”
1 Samuel 17:34-36 (MSG)
- Even Jesus, our Lord and Saviour, spent 40 days in the wilderness before starting His public ministry (Matthew 4:1-11)
The wilderness is often where God separates you from the noise so you can finally hear Him clearly.
It’s the place where your roots grow deeper, even when nothing seems to be blooming.
But here’s the thing:
Wilderness seasons can feel lonely, confusing, and sometimes painful. When doors close, relationships shift, or nothing seems to be moving forward, our natural instinct is to assume something is wrong. We want out — fast.
Yet if you look closely, you’ll see that God does some of His most transformative work there. He:
- Strips away distractions.
- Teaches you dependence.
- Builds resilience and obedience.
- Replaces performance with presence.
It’s in the wilderness that God asks, “Will you still trust Me when there’s no applause? Will you still love Me when it’s just Me?”
Your Wilderness is a Place for Growth
Your wilderness is where true faith begins to grow. When we can honestly answer those question in the positive, even when it’s hard is a reflection of the growth and changes in our heart posture.
You might not see the purpose yet, but your wilderness has one. It’s an incubation space — a spiritual greenhouse — where God develops the character to sustain the promises He’s preparing to release. Because being blessed without the capacity to steward the blessings can quickly turn into a curse.
So, if you’re in a quiet, hidden, or uncertain season right now, don’t rush to escape it.
Lean in, listen and learn.
God is not punishing you; He’s preparing you.
He is teaching you how to walk by faith, not by sight. And one day, when He calls you out, you’ll realize, the wilderness wasn’t wasted.
Questions for you:
- What does your current “wilderness” look like?
- What distractions might God be asking you to release so you can hear Him better?
- How can you choose to trust His process this week?
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for the seasons that draw me closer to You, even when they don’t feel easy. Help me to recognize Your hand in the quiet and trust that You are working, even when I cannot see it. Teach me to rest, listen, and grow in this season. Amen.
