Have you ever felt your joy slip away in an instant?
Maybe it was at a wedding when yet another relative asked,
“So when is it your turn?”
Or perhaps scrolling social media left you comparing your journey with others. If you’re honest, joy can sometimes feel fleeting in the single season.
But the Bible reminds us that joy is not tied to circumstances. Joy is a fruit of the Spirit, something that grows deep within when we abide in Christ.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.”
Galatians 5:22–23
Let’s take a closer look at what God’s joy looks like, and how you can cultivate it in this season of your life.
Joy in the Bible: Paul and Silas in Prison
In Acts 16:25, Paul and Silas were beaten, chained, and thrown into a Philippian jail. By all accounts, they had every reason to feel discouraged, bitter, or hopeless. Yet at midnight, they began praying and singing hymns to God.
That night, their joy in the Lord was so powerful that it became a testimony to others, the prisoners listened, and even the jailer’s family eventually believed in Christ.
This story shows us something profound: joy is not the absence of hardship; it’s the presence of God in hardship.
A Modern Example: Betsie ten Boom’s Unshakable Joy
When I think about joy in suffering, I can’t help but remember Betsie ten Boom, Corrie ten Boom’s sister.
The ten Boom family was imprisoned in Ravensbrück concentration camp during World War II for hiding Jews. In the most inhumane conditions, Betsie radiated joy. She would thank God for small things; even the fleas in their barracks, because the guards avoided entering, giving them freedom to hold Bible studies.
Her perspective was so anchored in Christ that she remained joyful until her last breath. Betsie’s joy wasn’t naïve denial of pain; it was a deep-rooted confidence in God’s presence. She famously said, “There is no pit so deep that He is not deeper still.”
Betsie’s story reminds us: true joy doesn’t wither when life is hard, it grows stronger because it’s planted in eternity.
Relatable Story: Choosing Joy in Singleness
Let’s talk about Bukola. She’s 38, loves God, but sometimes dreads weddings and baby showers because of the constant reminders of what she doesn’t yet have.
One day, instead of withdrawing into sadness, she asked the Holy Spirit to help her see the day differently. She chose to focus on celebrating her friend, serving where she could, and thanking God for His faithfulness in her own journey. By the end of the day, she found herself laughing, full of gratitude, and genuinely joyful.
That’s the power of perspective: joy is a choice we can make daily, by the Spirit’s help.
How to Cultivate Joy in Singleness
Here are some practical steps to grow joy in your own life:
- Anchor yourself in gratitude. Start each day writing three things you are thankful for. Gratitude shifts your focus from lack to abundance.
- Sing or worship intentionally. Just like Paul and Silas, music is a powerful tool to stir joy in your spirit.
- Limit comparison. If social media drains your joy, take breaks. Remember, you are on your own unique journey with God.
- Serve others. Joy often multiplies when we shift attention from ourselves to blessing someone else.
- Pray with expectancy. Invite the Holy Spirit daily to grow His fruit in you — joy included.
Questions for You:
- What situations tend to steal my joy, and how can I prepare my heart differently?
- How can I practice gratitude this week in a tangible way?
- Where is God asking me to choose joy instead of waiting for circumstances to change?
A Prayer for Joy
Father, thank You for the gift of joy that doesn’t depend on my circumstances. Help me, through the Holy Spirit, to choose joy daily; in waiting, in celebration, and even in difficulty. Teach me to see life through the lens of Your presence. Just as Betsie ten Boom radiated joy in her suffering, may my life testify of Your goodness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Final Encouragement
Singleness is not a season of lacking joy, it’s a season where God can teach you deep, lasting joy that no circumstance can take away. Just like Paul and Silas, just like Betsie ten Boom, you can carry joy that testifies of Christ to everyone around you.
