Sharing tips on how you can start a Bible Reading Plan
“I need to read more of my Bible”,
Say Christians at the beginning of the year.
I know this because it’s something my friends and I would usually say. We would include this goal amongst our list of resolutions but often fail to achieve it.
Last year, my plan had been to read the whole Bible. By January, I had created a skeletal Bible plan for the rest of the year. But you probably know what they say about good intentions. This particular one did not pan out.
A few days in, I realised that the plan was ambitious and meant that I was just reading but barely understanding. For one thing, it meant reading too many chapters each day with little time to meditate on these chapters.
I realized that I needed a Bible Plan that allowed me read enough and also meditate on scriptures read.
Though I didn’t read the whole Bible last year, my thirst for God’s word led to a journey through Galatians and I was able to create a meaningful 30-day devotional for Christian Women. This study was a joy to write and I can’t wait for you to read it(it’s a FREE devotional and you can get your copy here).
Shortly after this, while I was doing my annual review, I stumbled on my plans to read through the Bible. I decided that I had to find a way to make this a reality. I scoured Google and found a 52 week Bible reading plan through the Old Testament.
I’m currently working through this plan and it’s been incredible so far. It’s become my very own Bible reading challenge. It has also given me a chance to get into Bible Journaling as I write out parts of the scriptures that I find interesting, and the parts that speak to me.
What about you? Did you make a similar goal to read your Bible? Are you now ready to take the necessary step? If so, you can try out this 52 week plan. It has worked for me and may also work for you.
Three lessons you need before you start a Bible Reading Plan
Here are three lessons you need to know before you start a Bible reading plan.
-
The “WHEN”
Decide on when you want to start and hold yourself accountable. I had decided to start on January 1st so I made sure I had printed by reading plan before this date.
-
The “HOW”
Create a reading plan or find one on Pinterest and Google(you can also use the one I’m using). While we are often told to think big, remember that your plan has to work for you. Don’t choose or create something that becomes a burden rather than a means of achieving your goal.
-
The “WHERE”
Create a schedule of when you will read your Bible and where you want to do it. I scheduled mine in the morning just before breakfast and I read at my desk.
Beyond these three areas is to know your “WHY”, why you want to read the Bible. Are you doing it because it’s what’s expected of you or because you want to learn more about God’s word so you can know him better and grow spiritually.
Insights from my Bible Study
To keep me accountable, I will be sharing periodic insights from my study. It will be anywhere between 10 – 20 things I learnt from each study. I will be sharing this on the blog and email newsletter.
So, there you have it, my journey to spending more time in God’s word. I pray that as we spend more time in God’s word, we will grow deeper and stronger spiritual roots. Remember that the word is a lamp to your feet and a light to your path.
