One of the hardest lessons I have had to learn, and continue to learn, as a Christian has been around money.
I have seen God happily (I believe the Holy Spirit has done these things with relish) dismantle many of my long‑held beliefs and attachments to money.
I have seen Him strip me, time and again, of my reliance on savings, my fears about provision, and my illusion of control.
Reading this, you might think I believe money is unimportant, but that couldn’t be further from the truth.
Money matters.
It plays a powerful role in our lives, in ministry, and in legacy.
But our utter reliance and dependence on it, rather than the Giver, is often the problem.
Jesus and Money
When you read through the gospels, you will notice that Jesus didn’t shy away from the topic of money. I believe He did this because money had become another god in people’s lives, a major idol.
“No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other;
you will be devoted to one and despise the other.
You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money.”
Matthew 6:24 (NLT)
This is not just about greed, but the danger swings both ways.
Some Christians equate piety with poverty, and this too can be dangerous because it often leaves them vulnerable and unable to meet their own needs, let alone bless others.
So, should a Christian become rich?
Is money important?
Do we need to have it?
And how can we have more of it, God’s way?
The Bible makes it clear: Money is a blessing when it is surrendered to God’s purposes.
The life of Abraham proves this. In Genesis 15:1, God reassures him that He is Abraham’s “very great reward.” And in Deuteronomy 8:18, He reminds Israel that He gives the power to get wealth.
So yes, God blesses His people, but He also warns us to keep our hearts right.
Five Prayers for a healthy, Holy Relationship with Money
These prayers are about being transformed so that, when wealth comes, you can carry it with wisdom, freedom, and obedience.
1. A Prayer to Understand Your Source
“But remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you the ability to produce wealth…”
Deuteronomy 8:18
Wealth is not primarily the result of favor, connections, or even hard work. Those matter, but God is the Source.
When you recognise Him as your Provider, you will neither panic in lack nor become arrogant in abundance.
Pray:
“Lord, help me to remember that everything I have comes from You. You are the one who gives every good and perfect gift. Thank you for your blessings, and keep me from pride in abundance and from fear in lack. Let my trust always rest in You.”
2. A Prayer to Learn How to Abase and Abound
“I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation…whether living in plenty or in want.”
Philippians 4:12
Paul learned the secret of contentment in any season: that his financial stability wasn’t tied to his bank balance, but in Christ. Whether in seasons of much or little, he had learned to rest in God.
Pray:
“Father, teach me contentment in all circumstances. Help me to honour you in seasons of plenty without waste, and to trust You deeply in seasons of lack.”
3. A Prayer for Stewardship
“The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.”
Genesis 2:15
Stewardship is the ability to manage well what God places in your hands. Without it, blessings are squandered. With it, blessings multiply. Knowing that everything God gives us is His, and understanding that we are called to use it wisely is important.
The parable of the talents exemplifies this, it brings back to the fore God’s mandate to us in Genesis 1:28, where we are called to be “…fruitful and multiply, fill the earth and govern it.”
Man’s core role is stewardship. Before God gave Adam anything else, He gave him responsibility.
Living this out in our finances will liberate us from the shackles of greed and fear.
Pray:
“Lord, give me wisdom to manage my finances well. Teach me to steward my finances in a way that honours you and serves your kingdom agenda on earth.”
4. A Prayer to Learn to make Money God’s Way
“Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: “I am the Lord your God, who teaches you to proft, who leads you in the way you should go.”
Isaiah 48:17
Praying about our finances is not just about managing it, but also about making it. Here’s the thing: making money God’s way may seemed harder and longer when compared to illegal and get rich quick schemes, but it is often the path that lasts.
When God empowers us, He doesn’t just help us increase our bank balances, but also works on our heart and character so we can sustain what He has given us.
Pray:
“Lord, guard my heart from greed, fear, or impatience. Teach me to seek you first in my work and all my dealings. Help me to walk circumspectly, choosing to grow wealth the kingdom way.”
5. A Prayer to Live a Full and Abundant Life, God’s Way
“I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
John 10:10
Abundance in God’s Kingdom is about wholeness, purpose, and joy, not greed or excess. God desires His people to live full lives so they can fulfil His call and be generous.
Pray:
“Lord, show me what an abundant life looks like in You. Free me from the world’s definition of success and let my prosperity reflect Your goodness.”
Seek the Giver, First
Money is a blessing from God, but it’s also a test.
It can reveal where our trust truly lies.
If you want lasting financial breakthrough, then you must seek to do it God’s way, earn his way and manage it as a good steward.
As you pray these prayers, expect God to not only provide, but to shape your heart so that when the blessing comes, it doesn’t take His place.
