One thing I’ve learned walking with God is this:
Sometimes the moment right after your greatest spiritual breakthrough is when you face the fiercest attacks.
We’ve just spent seven days in prayer and praise. You’ve poured out your heart before the Lord, lifted your voice in worship, and drawn near to His presence. That joy you feel? It’s not just an emotion, it’s a spiritual strength.
And that’s exactly why it’s often the first thing the enemy will try to steal.
Even Jesus experienced this. After 40 days of fasting and intimate communion with the Father, He was immediately led into the wilderness to be tempted (Matthew 4:1–11). The timing was no accident. The enemy knows that joy fuels faith, and if he can shake it, he can weaken your resolve.
Same thing happened to the Prophet Elijah (1st Kings 18:20-40). Imagine defeating the prophets of Baal in an incredible way, yet fleeing and going into hiding because of the threat of one woman?
This was a man who saw God move in an amazing ways, yet he struggle to believe the same God after receiving death threats from Jezebel (1 Kings 19).
This is what the devil does.
He whispers lies and doubt into our hearts. He hits us right where it hurts, and we must be aware and sensitive to his wiles so we do not fall.
Here’s the truth: Your joy doesn’t have to be circumstantial.
The joy of the Lord is your strength (Nehemiah 8:10). That means you can carry it through both the mountaintops and the valleys.
When the challenges come, and they will, here’s how to guard your joy:
-
Keep your praise alive. Don’t stop singing just because the music fades. Keep singing despite how you feel and what is happening around you. We are called to “rejoice always…” Philippians 4:5
-
Stay rooted in the Word. Scripture will steady you when feelings waver.
-
Remember what God has done. Revisit your testimonies; they’re reminders of His faithfulness. Count your blessings and name them one by one.
-
Lean on your community. Don’t isolate yourself when trials come; joy multiplies in fellowship. Find trusted friends who can walk this journey with you. Having people who can encourage your heart and pray with you is a blessing.
-
Rest in God’s presence daily. Joy grows in intimacy with Him. Continue to cultivate your relationship with your Heavenly Father. We are continually called to trust God in all things and to lean not on our own understanding. This is key to finding rest in Him, For He is the one that restores your soul(Psalm 23) and leads you in the way you should go.
Friend, the enemy doesn’t get to dictate your atmosphere. You can decide that no matter what happens, your joy stays intact. Resist him, speak the word over your situation, and see your atmosphere shift.
So today, take a deep breath, lift your eyes, and declare:
“My joy is not up for grabs. It is anchored in Christ. And His joy will continually be my strength.”
Amen
